GARY: "THINGS AREN'T GOING OUR WAY"
Posted on: Sun 03 Jan 2010
Gary Waddock bemoaned his side's luck after the narrow 1-0 defeat to Norwich City on Saturday.
Korey Smith's 78th minute strike settled matters at Adams Park, but only after Matty Phillips had seen a shot cannon back off the post moments earlier.
The Blues boss said: "If Matt Phillips hadn't hit the post and the ball had gone in it would have been a different game.
"He did everything right. If you are top of the league those go in but when you are where we are they don't run for you. Things are not going our way at the moment.
"Scott Shearer made some excellent saves for us but the whole team showed a determination and a desire to try and get something from a very difficult game for us.
"We didn't take our chance when it came and everybody is very disappointed not to get anything out of the game. But what do we do? Do we lie down and die or do we roll our sleeves up a little further to try and get something from our next game?"
Waddock was happy with way the Blues reacted after consecutive defeats to Yeovil and Brighton over Christmas.
He said: "There were players out there who showed the commitment we are looking for in the situation we are in.
"There had to be a response after the two games we have been involved in recently and credit to the players because they did that. The players are devastated that they got nothing from it because they worked extremely hard.
"We took Norwich as far as we could and it's difficult not to take at least a point from it. We were looking for a response, possibly even a clean sheet after the goals we have conceded, but it wasn't to be. It was a sloppy goal from our point of view and it's a difficult one to take."
Adam Hinshelwood made his debut at the heart of the defence after completing his move from Aldershot on Friday and Waddock was encouraged by his display.
"I was very pleased with his performance. It's a step up but I thought his performance, while he was on the field, was extremely good."
The Chairboys chief said after Monday's 5-2 defeat to Brighton that he could take no positives from the game, but he felt his side's latest display offered plenty of positives going into the weekend game with Leeds at Elland Road.
"There are lots of positives I can take. There were a number of qualities I was looking for from the players and I saw a lot of them.
"It's all very well trying to play a certain style here, and we want to do that, but you've got to do the ugly side as well and we did that."
Waddock also confirmed that he is in discussions with both Reading and Southend about the possibility of bringing Scott Davies and Kevin Betsy back to Adams Park after the duo's loan spells came to end after the Norwich game.
